The National Capital Band arrived in Orléans at midday. Our concert venue for the evening was the Conservatoire (a school for music, dance and theatre arts), just across the street from the magnificent Cathedral Sainte-Croix. The original plan had been to unload our luggage and instruments at the Conservatoire, then walk just around the corner to the Hotel Groslot (the ceremonial hotel d’ville, or city hall, of Orléans) for a short performance and reception with some civic leaders. Unfortunately, we were not able to enter the Conservatoire building, as there were performance examinations in progress which could not be disturbed. We were given a small breezeway to store our luggage, and our instruments remained on the truck while we ate lunch on our own at cafes near the cathedral.

Leaving the area of Tours on the morning of Thursday, May 24, many members of the National Capital Band were in great anticipation of the day’s activities. Since the itinerary for the tour had been announced, the visit to the Normandy area, including a concert and ceremonies at the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach, had been recognized as one of the high points of the journey.

On Wednesday, 23 May, the National Capital Band had our longest travel day of the tour, leaving Zürich at 5:15 am. With the travel distance to Tours in France, driver reset stops required by regulation, and an anticipated stop for passport checks at the border, the estimated travel time was 12 hours. Fortunately, we did not have to stop at the border, and traffic was lighter than anticipated, so we made excellent time (despite the fact that at every stop the men’s restroom was being cleaned and was either closed or partially closed). The band ate lunch on the road and we arrived in Fontevraud in good time.

For our final day in Switzerland, the band traveled back to Zürich from Basel. We arrived first in the Hottingen area of the city, where we played a special concert at the Alterszentrum Hottingen (Old People’s Center of Hottingen). The center is not a Salvation Army property, but the manager, Matthias Fuhrer, is a member of the Zürich Central corps band. Matthias was one of the main organizers of the NCB’s days in Zürich, along with Zürich Central bandmaster Daniel Bates.

Monday, 21 May saw the National Capital Band leaving Bern and making the relatively short journey to the city of Basel. Near both the German and French borders in the extreme northern part of Switzerland, Basel is situated on the banks of the upper Rhine as it comes down out of the Swiss mountains to form the border between France and Germany. Unfortunately, we had to leave one of our members behind in Bern, as he had become ill. Several others in the band were also experiencing some discomfort, leading us to suspect a round of food poisoning.
