David graduated from James Madison University in 2009 with a degree in Music Education. During his time at the university, he was a member of the JMU Brass Band for four years.

He became familiar with the Salvation Army by working as an instructor at the NCV Music Conservatory at Camp Happyland for several summers, and joined the National Capital Band in 2008.

In September 2009, he began working as the music director for the Fredericksburg Corps.
